LOST: Season 6 Episode 16 - What They Died For

Hello LOSTIES!  It's getting very real now isn't it?  As Jacob may tell us, "We're very close to the end."  And this episode seemed very clear in proving that to us.  In every penultimate episode to a LOST season finale, we usually witness the ever essential SETUP epic end-game mission of that season.  It is no different for this episode leading to the Series Finale of what will go down as TV's greatest achievement (yes, I mean LOST!).   For all of the mysteries that have befuddled us all season and some even longer, we are beginning to see everything take shape.  The Sideways Stories are coming together in an awesome way, our remaining candidates are getting ever so close to their true purpose and the antagonist of the story has raised the stakes of his ultimate plan as well.  I only have 2 more opportunities to do this and I'm not going to waste them folks.  Even for a setup episode, it has done its job tremendously and has me super psyched to see how it's all going to end.  I'll save my tears for later folks.  This episode gets a bonafide WOW!!!!!!! from me.  I almost don't want to get into the recap, because once I do, I know I will only be doing this one more time!   But alas, the show must go on.  Let's do this!

"What They Died For" - One could assume we are going to learn the tale of why Sun, Jin, Sayid, well EVERYONE has died.  And by the peak point of this episode, we do get a lot more information from someone who does have answers!  But Jacob's chat with the Candidates was only part of the fun of tonight's episode.  The Flash Sideways continued to focus on a large collection of the LOSTIES and getting them all moving closer to being in the same place.  There may have even been a hint of the ol' Man of Science vs. Man of Faith with a dash of Mr. Eko thrown in there for good measure!  Man, I love coming full circle.  Anyway, we also rejoin Richard, Miles and Ben to see what they've been up to.  And we have a meeting of 2 folks that I sure have been waiting to see for a couple of seasons.  And, in my opinion, their relationship concluded the way I always wanted it to!  Oh yeah, in case I forgot to mention, Smokey is in this episode too!   Time to dive in!

Flash Sideways

As I mentioned, we were visiting many of our LOSTIES in the Flash Sideways timeline.  Of course, there was one CONSTANT (pun definitely intended) that strung the scenes together and is causing them all to unfold as they are.  You guessed it:  Desmond David Hume!  Here is what went down in Sideways Land.

Jack and the Extended Family
Jack wakes up and heads to the bathroom as we have seen him do a couple times this season.  One more time he looks into that mirror and notices something.
  • That cut is back on his neck. HUH??   Remember the cut he saw in the mirror in the premiere this season?  (LA X)   We have said since then that this cut was somehow tied to Island Jack, once comparing it to the Season 5 ventures to blow up Jughead and then again comparing it to when Widmore sent a rocket to the Island that blew up right beside Jack.   It's not really looking like it's going to tie to either of those events anymore, but it certainly must be related to his Island existence.  Of course, we also know Jack looked in the mirror in the LIGHTHOUSE episode and noticed his the scar from his appendectomy which he didn't seem to recall happening when he was a child (and we know in the Island timeline that it happened right before he first left the Island).   Stay tuned on this one.  Surely, we're going to find out what is tying Sideways to the Island story in the Series Finale!

  • David Shephard, Jack's Sideways son, comes in to let Jack know that he made breakfast.  They have a nice joke about how pouring cereal is not "making breakfast".  And we have some more golly gee shucks "we are happy" father/son moments.
  • David asks Jack if he is coming to the CONCERT.   We get more tidbits on this in future Sideways scenes.  Apparently, there is going to be a benefit concert at the almighty museum.  Yes,  we thought that the Hospital and Police Stations would be the big meeting grounds for everyone.  And they did play their part as INITIAL meeting grounds.  But it looks like everything is pointing towards this grand meeting place at the Benefit Concert.  Will David be playing there?  That would be my guess.  Will Daniel Faraday be his piano teacher and also be taking part in this event?  That would be kinda funny wouldn't it?  Perhaps this benefit will be funded by the Widmore Family.  I'd say it was the same benefit that Eloise Hawking was planning in Desmond's "Happily Ever After" episode but I think a few days have passed since then and it seemed like they were getting ready to have that event that night!  But you never know.
  • Oh right, David's MOTHER is going to be there!  We'll finally find out who it is.  Could it be Juliet?  I think it would be a safe bet that we might be seeing her in the final episode that airs in the existence of LOST.  You know, we do need to see her and Sawyer go Dutch on coffee after all!   Could it be Sarah?  We do know that Julie Bowen has been hard at work on Modern Family, but she just so happened to be filming an episode in Hawaii (that just aired last week).  It sure would be a shame if they didn't somehow work her into the final episode, right?   It has to be one of those 2, right?  I know other people have said Ana Lucia, but I'm still not seeing it!    Of course, it also was interesting that Jack seemed to still have feelings for whoever the ex-wife is.  David told him not to get weird.  See, I have just been figuring that Kate and Jack would meet up in Sideways land and get a rush of feelings back.  But Jacob did make that point about them all being alone and flawed (we'll get to that) in the Island timeline.  Jack doesn't seem to be alone in this timeline.   Would he still NEED Kate in this timeline?  Based on his comments at the end of season 5, he still loves her and thinks he could have another chance with her if the stakes were different.   Surely, them running into each other at the benefit ball will be the key to him remembering stuff.  We'll see!
  • But that's not all folks, Claire was at Jack's place too!  If you recall, he asked her to come stay with  him.  Seems like that baby will be coming along pretty soon.  Hmm what if she goes to the concert too and ends up going into labor?  That sure would be interesting!  Maybe Kate would be forced to deliver her baby again.   Maybe Boone will be there and fall from a scaffolding and Jack will need to work on him (kidding folks!  Or am I??).   Lots of possibilities, but only one episode left for it all to happen.

  • Jack gets a phone call.  It's Desmond pretending to be Oceanic Airlines.  And he claims that they have found Christian Shephard's coffin.  It will be arriving in LA by the end of the day.  Desmond then apologizes for the delay.  Hmm, not sure how that's going to play into things yet.  But, I sure would like that final scene between Jack and Christian somehow in the final episode!
Desmond goes Back to School

We see a very familiar site with Desmond sitting in his car outside of the school where Ben and Locke teach.  He sees Locke returning back to school for the first time since Desmond ran him over the last time.  It looks like he's about to start the car and get ready to run him over again but then...

  • Dr. Benjamin Linus to the rescue!  He throws himself in front of the car and refuses to let Desmond try and kill John Locke.  He even tries to place him under citizen's arrest.  Ahhh good times.

  • Desmond tells Benjamin that he is not here to hurt Locke, he is trying to help him let go.  A recurring phrase being used in these sideways episodes, well pretty much throughout the series.  But we'll touch on it more in a bit.
  • In the meantime, Ben wants to know who Desmond is.  And how does Desmond tell him?  Well he beats the crap out of him of course.  Nothing new for Island Ben!  He has been a punching bag for his entire run on LOST.  But, we sure have been missing it this season.  Glad we're coming full circle on that too.   Oh but wait...while Ben was getting punched, he seemed to visualize Desmond beating him up on the docs when he tried to kill Penny.   He started to remember is former Island existence!

  • Of course, this reminds me that Ben HAS been to the Island before with his father even in this sideways timeline.  So when we're hearing thoughts of Flocke wanting to destroy the Island (I know, I'm way ahead of myself), we immediately think about that sideways Island underwater.  But, now that I'm remembering that the Island DID exist at one point in Sideways Land, I'm having a problem thinking that it is some sort of EPILOGUE to the Island story.  Unless we find out that the Island being underwater is the result of something else that happened.   2.5 hours folks.  2.5 hours!  Maybe Pierre Chang will be able to explain some stuff at the benefit concert?  We'll see!  Until then, we have 4 days and chance to theorize!
  • We rejoin Ben later at the Nurse's Office in the school.  Locke comes in to see if Ben is okay.  When Ben recounted what happened, Locke begins to call the police.   But Ben tells Locke that he SAW something while he was getting beaten.  And when Desmond told Ben that he was trying to get Locke to let go, he totally believed him.   The words "Let Go" triggered something in Locke. Something in his conversation he had with Jack before leaving the hospital.   By the way, this whole storyline pretty much confirms that Desmond wasn't trying to kill Locke because Flocke threw him in the well in Sideways land.   He is going through these actions to get these people to "wake up".   Slowly but surely, it's happening.  And I would hope it would happen to ALL of them this Sunday, May 23rd!

Back to the Police Station

By the way, great scene transition using Locke's phone call to the Police to transition to a new Sideways locale.  And what do you know?  Desmond is now at the police station and he's requesting to see Detective James Ford!

  • Before Desmond gets back to him, Sawyer is talking to Miles who is getting all dressed up.   Miles just happens to be going to a benefit at his dad's museum (Pierre Chang is his dad in case anyone forgot!).  And yes the benefit is a concert and he has been telling Sawyer about it for a week.   I wonder if there will be any significance in what the benefit is for or if it's just an excuse to get all of the LOSTIES in one place.   Sawyer did get an invite but once he found out Charlotte is going, he passed.  Something tells me he will change his mind!  The more I think about this, the more it seems like it would be perfect if Juliet is Jack's ex-wife.  But I'm not ruling out Sarah just yet!

  • So anyway, Desmond comes back to talk to Sawyer.  He explains the hit and run and then the beating of a school teacher that happened by the same suspect.  And then he turns himself in.  What's his plan?  Oh you know, he just so happens to be put in a holding cell with Sayid and Kate, not to mention he got to run in with Sawyer too!   Oh wait a second, I know exactly how Sawyer will end up at the benefit.  Miles is going to spot Desmond and Kate and the benefit and call up his partner to inform him that 2 escaped convicts are there!  Or you know, something to that extent.

Ben's Romance???

Okay, so I'll admit I had heard a rumor that they were going to develop a bit of a love interest for Ben.  But for some reason, I never thought it would be this.  Yet, it makes the most sense I can't believe I didn't think about it.   This was high comedy, but some sort of sweetness to it all that it was perfect.  Anyway, injured Ben Linus runs into Alex at school and she is so upset to see that he is all beaten up and bruised.
  • Love that Alex called Ben "like...the nicest guy ever!"  He might just be that in sideways land but we all know of his ISLAND Existence!  This is one guy that would benefit from not knowing what he was/is in the Island timeline.

  • Anyway, Alex insists that Ben should not be driving and offered for her mother to give him a ride.  (Love the Napoleon reference too)  And we finally get to see Sideways Rousseau!  She had initially turned down appearing in the final season, but they worked out a deal to get her back.   Just in time!  She still has her French Accent but she is VERY happy to see Ben in this sideways story.  He has done so much for her daughter, that she couldn't be more pleased to help Ben out.  They even get him to come over for dinner!  (He's come a long way from being a baby-napper!  Then again, we found out he only kidnapped the baby so that he could spare both of Rousseau and Alex's life)
  • After they ate at Casa Rousseau, she tells Ben how Alex has always looked at him as a father figure since she never knew her father.  Alex's real father died when she was 2 (I think that's what she said, it was kind of mumbled).     Of course, we do not know how he died here but it probably wasn't because Rousseau shot him due to his Smoke Monster infection!   We also do not know why she has come to be living in Los Angeles, but we could say that for every character that just happens to be residing there in sideways land!
  • Ben got all choked up at learning how much of an impact he is in Alexis's life.  He blames the onions to Rousseau and then she gets in one flirty line about how she'll put in fewer next time.   CRAZY!   Yet, crazy ironic that even in Sideways land, Ben and Danielle Rousseau seem to be parenting this child.   And now, we throw in a bit of a love twist and he might become an actual legal parent to Alex.

Man of Science, Man of Faith

We return to Jack's story in his office when John Locke comes to visit him.  He wants to discuss with him about everything that has been going on since Flight 815.

  • But first, Locke sees a picture of Jack, his son and his father sitting on the desk.  Not much worth noting.  Seems like just a little small talk with Jack telling Locke not to tell David they look alike.  But at least it's an excuse to put an, as always, "lovely" photo-shopped picture in here!
  • Locke goes into all of the events that have transpired.  They were on the same plane, Jack gave him his business card.  Locke threw it away (no offense!).  A few days later Locke is hit by a car and out of all of the doctors in Los Angeles he ended up with Jack (starting to sound like the old Locke!).  Then after Jack saves Locke's life, he still wants to fix him and Locke still doesn't want to be fixed.  Now, the same man that ran him over came back and beat up a school teacher but said he wasn't there to hurt Locke, he was there to help him "Let Go."   The last time we heard this?  Jack was speaking to Locke about how they both need to let things go.   Jack has dealt with the inability to let go in his Island life too which caused him to lose his marriage and his father.   Same with Locke as he became obsessed with his conman father and it ended up ruining his life.
  • Then Locke said the phrase we have been waiting for him to say.  "What if all of this is happening for a reason?"  It harkened back to his first Man of Science/Man of Faith discussion he had with Jack in season 1's EXODUS.   He even suggested that maybe Jack is SUPPOSED to fix him.
  • Jack resumed his role in the eternal debate saying that he wants to fix him but that Locke might be mistaking coincidence for fate.  And yes, as I mentioned earlier, this was an Eko line from back in season 2!
  • Of course, the difference here is that there are no ISLAND stakes in the mix and Jack isn't fuming mad and Locke isn't coming off TOO crazy in the discussion.  Locke disregards the debate on fate and decides that he is ready to get out of his chair!
Prison Break!

Sawyer comes into the holding cell and lets Sayid, Kate and Desmond know that he's shipping them all off to the County prison.

  • Kate pleads with Sawyer to let her go.  She goes on even further about how she is innocent.  I'm guessing we will get confirmation on this innocence in the finale as well. (maybe?)   She tells Sawyer that she knows he believed her.  He kind of agrees but also will not let her go because he's still an honorable cop.  (you know, until he finds Anthony Cooper and wants to kill him!)   Kate does put a bug in his ear that he doesn't seem like a cop to her.  He looks like he is regretting his decision to let her walk.
  • But alas, they are in the Police Van being moved to County.  But Desmond already has other plans.  He asks if they're all ready to get out of here.   Kate has no idea who this guy is and Sayid is calling him a crazy guy that turned himself in.  Desmond tells them both that the driver is going to stop and when it happens they're going to have to trust him and promise to do something for them in return.   Considering they think he is crazy they both just promise to do whatever if he can get them free.
  • Then the Van stops, and guess who opens the door?  It's everyone's favorite cop, Ana Lucia!  We knew we'd see her eventually!   Ana Lucia was apparently bought off by Desmond and they are waiting for the "BUYER" to arrive.   Desmond assures that he will be there soon.

  • A yellow Hummer rolls up and we already know who it is!  It's Hugo Reyes!!   "Sorry I'm late dude!"  And then he sees Ana Lucia and says that Desmond didn't tell her that she would be there.    Ana Lucia does not recognize Hurley at all and then Hurley right away hysterically changes his stance to "uhhh...No, we never met".   Woa, so wait a minute.  Does Hurley remember EVERYTHING now?  It sure seems like it, right?   So, does that mean both Desmond and Hurley (and maybe Charlie) are fully enlightened about their other existence?

  • Ana Lucia takes her $125,000 from Hurley and then says "Nice not knowing you!"  (ahhh the puns are off the charts!)   Hurley wonders why Ana Lucia isn't coming with them.  Desmond gives Hurley a very Eloise Hawking-esque response by saying that she is not ready YET.   Interesting, I wonder if we'll ever find out what constitutes someone being ready.  Or, maybe Desmond is suggesting that waking up Ana Lucia is not important to the big end-game he has in mind.
  • Hurley also has his Camaro there for Desmond and Kate to take.  And Hurley is apparently taking Sayid somewhere else!  But Desmond and Kate?  They just happen to be going to a concert and he has a dress for Kate to put on.

  • Desmond's last command is "LET'S GO" and they're off!  Kate and Jack will most certainly run into each other one more time.  Miles, Charlotte, Chang, Desmond will all be there.  Most likely Sawyer will show up.   Where are Hurley and Sayid going?  Maybe to the hospital to pick up Sun and Jin?   Perhaps Claire will be at the concert too?  (I know, I speculated above already).    When will the Locke surgery happen?  Before or after this concert?  Surely, he can't just go into surgery that afternoon and be done by nightfall right?    How will all of this happen in a 2.5 hour episode where we still have an Island story to close too?   I have the utmost faith they can do it.   But I will say one thing, I am VERY engaged in this Sideways Storyline.  I have always found it enjoyable throughout the season, but these past few episodes, since the Desmond "awakening" have been very interesting.   I am not upset at all that we'll be spending half of this series finale in Sideways Land and I cant wait to see how it all ties together!  I have faith that it will.   We can only have faith now people.  Get excited!
Oh right, we still have an Island story to get to in this recap!

The Non-Candidates and their Smokey Encounter

Ben, Richard and Miles arrival at Barracks
So the last we left Ben, Richard and Miles they had left Jack, Hurley, Sun and Frank to head to the barracks and get some explosives to blow up the plane.

  • I could get into semantics here and argue how Sawyer and Kate were able to travel from the Temple to the Barracks in what seemed like no time and now Ben, Richard and Miles appear to have taken days to get there.   But, it also took some time to get there back in season 3 as well (back in the "milking time" days).   I guess they do try to cover this by having Miles ask Ben if he "REALLY" knows a short-cut.   But it is a little strange that we are meant to believe that they actually have accomplished "NOTHING" during the period of time where everyone else reunited, separated, got captured, rescued, reunited again, got on the plane, got on a sub, 4 of them died and now here we are.  Meanwhile, this trio has just been wandering around the jungle and Richard's "Don't get in our way" comment becomes utterly pointless!    Oh well, I'll argue also that it's unimportant because the route they went with the story was pretty good anyway!
  • Plus the line where Ben says he has lived in the barracks a long time that he thinks he can find his way back; followed by Miles saying that he lived in the houses 30 years before he did, "otherwise known as last week" was a classic!  Of course, it was inaccurate too because little Ben lived there too!   But, hey it was a funny line!
  • Richard wonders if the C4 will still be there years later, Ben said he went to much trouble in hiding it (his secret room that we have seen a few times).  There was a brief moment where I thought we were seeing events that preceded the Ajira plane being wired up with C4 that we saw 2 episodes ago.   But this error in thought was quickly dismissed in the episode.
  • The trio arrive at the barracks.  There was a touching scene where Miles walked over the site where Alex died.  Richard explained to Ben that he came back and buried her  there after they all left.
  • We then move onto Ben's old house.  He heads to the bookcase that we have seen pushed back a couple times before.

  • Miles sees the "Smokey Summoning Door behind the Door" and gets another great line in.  "What's that? A 'Secreter' room?"  Ben retorts that that was where he was "TOLD" he could summon the smoke monster, but that was before he realized that it was the one summoning him.  Who told him?  Eh, we'll probably never know.  Maybe it was MIB himself.  But many people had questioned how Ben could summon smokey we had several theories on it.  I'm guessing that line was thrown in there to help explain that it was all part of Smokey's long con of Ben.

  • Ben opens the safe to the C4.  He asks Richard if he wants to cripple the plane or blow it to hell.   Of course the answer always has to be BLOW IT TO HELL!   Ben takes all of the C4 and put it in his backpack.   Maybe this C4 will still factor into the final episode somehow.  But we did confirm that this C4 is different than the C4 that Flocke snatched from the plane and that these events happened after all of those Hydra events already took place.
  • How did we confirm this?  Oh you know, because Charles Widmore and Zoe show up at Ben's place! Nice!  I must say, I didn't think this reunion was going to happen until the finale so this was a nice surprise for me.

Reunion with Widmore
  • Widmore and Zoe are held at gunpoint but Charles continues to rant off orders to Zoe anyway.  He tells her to take equipment from the outrigger and then sink the boat.  Looks like they have no intentions of heading back to Hydra.
  • Ben tries to hold some authority over Widmore saying that no one is going anywhere and he wants answers to why they're there.  Widmore argues that they won't survive without him so there is no point in shooting him.  He then sends Zoe on her way assuring her that Ben will not shoot her.
  • Charles asks Richard what they're doing here.  They fill him in saying that they were getting explosives to destroy the plane on Hydra (Ben looks frustrated that Richard would just give away their plan).  Widmore states that he had the plane rigged with explosives since he got there.  There you go folks.  2 answers in one.  Widmore definitely planted the C4 (Flocke told the truth), and Ben, Richard and Miles were just lost trying to find the barracks for a couple days.
  • Ironically, Charles says that, as usual, he is 3 steps ahead of Ben.  The ironic part is that Ben always seemed to be 10 steps ahead of everyone else!
  • Ben asked Charles how he got back, since there were apparently rules in place to prevent him from coming back for so many years.   I believe I had mentioned a few times in this blog that it seems like maybe Widmore had been visited by Jacob.  It would appear this definitely was the case.  It would have been great to see it but with the format of Flash Sideways and Island stories in episodes, we kind of just have to accept that it happened.
  • Charles says that Jacob visited him not long after "Ben's People" destroyed his freighter.  Wait a second, Keamy was hired by Widmore and was the one that wired the ship with C4!  Why would he suggest that BEN'S people blew it up?   Well, I guess we could argue that Richard shot Keamy and Ben finished the deed which caused the freighter to blow up, but I think part of the blame still goes to Keamy there.
  • Anyway, that's besides the point, Jacob apparently convinced Widmore of the error of his ways and told him everything he needed to know for "this exact purpose."  He doesn't get to explain what purpose but apparently did not trust Ben enough to have any desire to tell him anyway.
  • Zoe radios Charles on the walkie talkies and says that Flocke is already on his way back.   She is instructed to run back to the barracks as fast as she can.

  • Charles then suggests that they all need to hide.
  • Flocke continues his way from the dock but notices all of the equipment in the outrigger.  The stuff is probably all Desmond related, so perhaps it will come into play in the final episode!

  • Charles plans to hide in Ben's hidden room, a room that Locke has seen before, so theoretically Flocke should know about it too.   There is not a consensus on what to do.  Ben has no interest in hiding.  He wants to get it over with.  Miles doesn't like either plan so he plans to run away (my guess is he will run into Jack and crew next episode)
  • This seems meaningless at the time, but Ben asks Widmore for their walkie talkies so that he can give one to Miles in case he needs him.  Considering what we know by the end of the episode, this is probably how Ben is going to try to find the LOSTIES.

  • Widmore is convinced that Smokey will kill Ben but continues to go into hiding.
  • Richard decides that he is going to talk to Smokey.  He knows the guy and all that he wants is for Richard to join him.  (eh, I don't know about that anymore Richard!)   He wants to try and buy everyone else time by getting Smokey to leave with him.  With this, Miles runs off.
  • And then Ben and Richard wait for what is coming.

Smokey Arrival

  • It's not long before we hear the infamous "tikka tikka" sound that alarms us of Smokey's arrival.   Smokey doesn't waste any time taking Richard out!  No talking, just speeding through and plowing Richard and sending him flying off into the air.   Is Richard dead?  Yikes, it looks like it doesn't it?  I won't rule out his survival until we see the final 2.5 hours, but it would make sense that MIB has no interest in keeping Richard alive anymore since he was eavesdropping on the whole Richard/Hurley/Ghost Isabella moment where Richard was convinced that Smokey need to be kept on that Island.  But, maybe we'll see him again.  I'd like to think we would.   All that a shocked Ben can do is sit down and wait for the inevitable.

  • Flocke shows up to Ben in human form and we find out that Ben was just the man he was looking for.  And you know what?  I should have seen this coming.  Other blog commenters saw something like this coming but I have been a firm believer in Ben's redemption.  (some suspected that Ben and Smokey were in cahoots the whole time.  That, I still do not believe and this scene seems to dismiss that idea)  I did definitely want to see Ben's mischievous side before the end and his revenge on Widmore but I didn't think he would consider teaming up with Smokey.   And that is exactly what Smokey wants.  Since his other method of killing ALL of the Candidates in one show is gone, now he wants Ben to do the rest of the work for him.  Ben has already killed Jacob, why not kill a few more?

  • I will say this, it would seem like Ben is converted by the end of these scenes to being UBER Villain again, but I'm still holding out for the possibility that he is LYING to Flocke.  Why not use his best strength to his advantage in helping out the LOSTIES?   I could see Ben's arc ending in some kind of big sacrifice for the benefit of the LOSTIES.  But we shall see.
  • For now?  It would seem like Ben is going with what will keep him alive.  And Flocke promised Ben the one thing he has always wanted once again: POWER.   First thing is first, where is Widmore?   "He's hiding in my closet."  Don't hesitate or anything there, Ben!   If one thing is certain, there is definitely no love lost between Charles and Ben!

  • Ben takes Flocke inside and brings him right into the secret closet.  Flocke asks Ben to wait outside, but Ben wants to SEE what Flocke is going to do to them.  Nice.  They flip the lights on and there they are.  Gotta love Ben's "Sorry Charles."
  • Flocke comments about how nice it is to talk without the fences between them.  Flocke asks Zoe who she is.  Charles tells her not to talk to him or say anything.  And immediately upon saying that Flocke slits her throat.  Yep, Tina Fey is dead!   Why?  Flocke said that once Widmore told her not to talk to him she was useless.  Is that because she wouldn't be able to be persuaded into anything?  Or just because she wasn't going to spill the information he needed?  I'm going to guess the latter in this case.  Zoe ends up being a pretty pointless character in the end.  I guess it did help us piece together the importance of the electromagnetic properties of the Island, and Widmore's interest in it all, but she didn't really accomplish much!

  • Flocke is aware that Widmore is not afraid to die, so he decides to take a page out of Ben's playbook and threaten to kill Penelope Widmore when he gets off of the Island.  He gives his word that he wouldn't touch her if Charles gives up the information he wants.  Apparently, based on enhanced LOST re-airings, when Smokey gives his word on something he has to stick to it.  Charles still had his reservations but he does end up telling Smokey why he came back.
  • He brought Desmond back to the island because of his unique resistance to electromagnetism.  He was a measure of LAST RESORT.
  • Of course, because he doesn't want Ben to know anything that would give him any kind of useful information, he whispers what he meant by LAST RESORT to Flocke.

  • And then, Ben finally gets his revenge.  While Widmore is talking to Flocke, Ben starts firing several shots at him!  His justification?  Charles does not get to save his daughter, because Ben couldn't save his from Charles' order to have her killed.   NICE!  This was one moment that I definitely wanted to see happen before the end of LOST, and I got my wish.  It would seem kind of unresolved if Ben didn't get his revenge on Widmore in some fashion.  Now, there were RULES to prevent Ben from killing Widmore before.  I guess because Charles still had a purpose on the Island?  Now that he has brought Desmond back and showed him what he needed to show him, there was no more purpose.  This is what I'm going with!   The question still remains if Eloise Hawking is working for Man in Black as she still was the one that MIB (as Christian) sent Locke to when he left the Island.   Maybe, it's not important.  Or maybe it means everything!  We'll see.

  • Flocke was a little frustrated with Ben for killing Widmore, but it doesn't matter in the long run because he already got his information.  Ben then gets another creepy line in, "Good.  Did you say there were some other people to kill?"   Oooooh boy.   Hey, wherever this goes, it's great idea pairing up Terry O'Quinn and Michael Emerson for the final episode of LOST.  Some might even argue that it is PERFECT!!

The Candidates

Mourning and Resolve

When we last left Jack, Kate, Sawyer and Hurley things were pretty emotional.  They had just gotten back to the beach and we confirmed that Sun, Jin and Sayid were no longer with us.  Still no confirmation of Frank on the actual show, but there were some definitive comments made by executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, as well as Jorge Garcia on their respective podcasts.  Damon and Carlton said that there might be some commentary on it in the show before the end.   But for now, the LOSTIES have suffered a great loss and they're still recovering.
  • We first catch a glimpse of Jack pulling some thread off of a shirt.  He needs to stitch up Kate's gunshot wound.  The bullet went straight through but if he doesn't it will get infected.  Come on, this is great mirroring of the pilot episode when Kate stitched Jack up, right?   I'd even argue that he was using "standard black" thread to stitch it up!  Jack warns her that it's going to hurt but she just nods in approval.
  • Kate brings up Jin and Sun and how they had a little girl Ji Yeon.  And that Jin never even got a chance to meet her.  Everything that we brought up 2 weeks ago but it was great to hear it brought up on the show too.  And very emotional of course.  Kate says that "Locke" did this to them and now they have to kill him.  Jack acknowledged that they were both on the same page.  Oh it's on now!!!
  • We next catch Sawyer staring out into the sea of wreckage from the Sub explosion/sinking.  We will learn in a bit that he feels responsible for what happened.  But it was still a great moment watching Hurley and Kate join him staring out and reflecting.  I also love that the musical selections of Michael Giacchino for the moment harkened back to those first moments after the initial crisis of the Flight 815 crash had settled down.  Jack just stood there and reflected on what happened.  Nice mirroring not only with the plot and story moments, but the music too.  Good stuff.

  • Jack soon joins after and reluctantly tells them they all need to get moving to find Desmond.  If "Locke" wants Desmond dead, then they're going to need him.  They all gather their things and begin their trek that would enlighten them all.

On the Journey

  • Jack and Sawyer have a brief discussion on their way to the well.  Sawyer thinks he knows where it is since it's not far from the camp where he was residing with Flocke and crew.
  • Sawyer then asks Jack why Flocke wouldn't just kill Desmond.  Jack seems to understand a little bit about these rules governing things now.  He thinks, as we thought, that Flocke cannot kill Desmond himself.
  • Sawyer then starts talking about the bomb on the sub and how Jack said he couldn't kill them either.  Jack doesn't want to put any blame on Sawyer for what happened (Sawyer did pull those wires out of the bomb which caused the clock to move further).  Jack simply says that he has been wrong before and essentially that Sawyer shouldn't beat himself up about it.  It was FLOCKE that put them in that situation and he is the one that killed their friends.  Still a great humbling scene for Sawyer to concede to Jack.   I think this definitely had to happen before the end.  Jack needed everyone behind him one last time!
  • Meanwhile Hurley and Kate are following behind.   Hurley happens to see GHOST BOY Jacob! Now, that we confirmed it is Jacob, they Jacob theme music is playing with his arrival.  (I know I know, I keep talking about the music.  But hey, the SCORE is half of what makes LOST so great! Maybe even more than half.)
  • Boy Jacob creeps up from behind on Hurley and asks for his ashes back.  He knows that Hurley has them.  Hurley pulls them out of his pocket and then asks why the kid wants them.  "Because they're mine!"  He grabs the ashes and then runs away.  So crazy how these Ghosts can physically grab things and do things as well.  We first saw this with Charlie slapping Hurley in season 4.

  • By the way, is there anything greater than watching Hurley run?   He chases down ghost Jacob only to find the older Ghost Jacob sitting by a fire with his ashes burning in it.  Jacob tells Hurley that it doesn't matter where he has been because he is there now.  They make it sound so important that we should be questioning where he has been, but we know we're not going to see him anymore as a Ghost after this episode.  He tells Hurley that once the ashes burn out, he will never be seen again.  Jacob tells Hurley to gather his friends because they're very close to the end.

  • One other quick note, I guess Jacob was able to appear as both a Child and as Adult Jacob as a ghost?  I'd try to tie this into Taller Ghost Walt, but I just can't figure out a way.  Walt is still alive! Let's move on to more important things. (but I still hold out hope that we will get "SOMETHING" on Walt in the finale.)
The Candidates Meet Jacob
I guess it took Hugo the rest of the day to find his friends because Night has fallen once again when they all arrive to the campfire.  Then again, Jorge Garcia did make a joking comment on his podcast that all of the LOSTIES are late sleepers, so they don't begin their adventures until the late afternoon.  And they also stay out all night and don't go to sleep until the sun rises.  I have one response to Jorge: GOOD TIMES!
  • The big difference between this encounter with Jacob and other encounters?  Everyone can see him and hear him now.  Of course, as GHOST BOY, he did appear to Sawyer and Desmond too.  Not sure if Ghosts can just all of a sudden make themselves visible when they want to or Jacob can do it or maybe all 4 of them are believers now about what needs to be done so THAT makes them able to see him.  Guess it really doesn't matter in the end.  They all can see him and we can get a brain dump of what is going on!

  • Kate doesn't waste any time, she wants to know if he wrote their names on the wall and if he is the reason that Jin, Sun and Sayid are dead.  He confirms it all and apologizes.  I guess this kind of confirms that Jin and Sun were both candidates.  She is not accepting that he is sorry.  She wants to know why and wants to know that they didn't die for nothing.  Well, Jacob gives us a bit of an explanation!
  • He asks them all to sit down and says he will reveal all and everything they need to know about protecting the Island.  Because by the time the fire burns out, one of them will have to start doing it.
  • Hurley asks why they were brought to the Island.  Jacob explains that they were all brought here because he made a mistake he made a very long time ago (we confirmed it was about 2000 years ago by producer comments and comments in the script that actors in the show recalled).  He refers to turning his brother into ol' Smokey and he comes clean to the Candidates that he made him that way.   The mistake he made essentially has set up a scenario where every one of them and anyone they ever cared for is going to die.  They still have not gotten into explaining how this is possible.  If Smokey leaves the Island, does the world cease to exist?   Does it cease to exist as it is? (a la sideways world)  It would seem that the Man in Black has every intention of leaving the Island and threatens Widmore with killing Penny.  So MIB doesn't think the world will cease to exist.  And this would pretty much imply that maybe Widmore doesn't think that either, even though he implied it to Jin and/or Desmond in his conversations.   So this part is still left very vague.
  • Jacob says that ever since he turned MIB into Smoke, he has been trying to kill Jacob.  And it was only a matter of time before he figured out how, so he needed a replacement.  And THAT is why he brought them all here.  Yeah, we kind of figured all of that out already, but the scene is essential to let them ALL know why he did it and for confirmation to us.
  • Sawyer asks why he has to be punished for Jacob's mistake.  He claims to have had a good thing going off of the Island.  And then here it came, the moment that tied everything together.  Things we have discussed season after season.  Why was Jack so adamant about going home?  What did he really have to go back to?  Same with Sawyer, Kate.  Really, any of them!  Yes, some of them had true reasons for needing to get off of the Island.  Sayid wanted to be reunited with Nadia, but once he was about to lose her, THAT is when Jacob touched him.   Desmond wanted to get back to Penny.  And he did.  And he still has a chance to go back to that.  But he was brought here as a LAST RESORT.   Interesting.   Anyway, Jacob pretty much insists that they were all flawed individuals.  He didn't pluck them out of a happy existence.   Something we spent the first 3 seasons getting backstories on.  They were all searching for purpose in their lives (well, kinda all of them).  Coming to the Island started their clean slate.     He chose them because they were all like him.  They were all alone.  They needed this place as much as it needed them.   Hey, it all makes sense to me!   And it brings a sort of closure, at least to me, why they're all there.

  • Kate asks why she is crossed off of the list.  Jacob said he crossed her off because she became a mother.  Now, we must assume this had to be because she became a mother to Aaron.  Of course, there are some speculations out there that perhaps Jack and Kate had conceived a child in their one night prior to coming back to the Island.  It certainly would make things interesting!  Of course, I don't think we'll be spending any of the last 2.5 hours with Kate looking for those Widmore Pregnancy tests!  So, I'm going with the Aaron thing for now.   And now that she is trying to get Claire back to Aaron, Jacob is saying that it was just chalk on a wall and the job could be hers if she wanted it.  Nice.  (I guess this really doesn't confirm why her name wasn't crossed off on the lighthouse, but maybe it really was just to throw MIB off as Jacob was still keeping his eye on her).
  • Jack asks Jacob what the job is.  And sure enough, it's what we learned in last week's episode.  There is a light at the center of the Island.  The job is to make sure that it never goes out.  That's how to protect the Island.  Sawyer retorts that Smokey said there is nothing to protect it from.  Jacob re-retorted that the light must be protected from SMOKEY himself!  Because, yes, Smokey is going to attempt to return to the source!
  • Jacob tasks them all with something that he wasn't able to do.  The Man in Black must be killed.  Jack asks if it's even possible.  Jacob hopes it is because he is definitely going to try and kill all of them.  Looks like even the all knowing Jacob doesn't even know how to kill Smokey.
  • Hurley then asks how Jacob will pick the next protector.  And, as we have been hearing all season starting with the end of season 5, he wants to give them all something he never had.  A CHOICE. They have to choose to be the next protector.  Kate asks what if none of them choose?  Jacob responded that then this ends very badly!
  • No fear though, the man that seems most prepared to take the job volunteers: Jack Shephard.  I think we all knew deep down it would be him.  It HAD to be him, but it was great to see his journey over 6 seasons to the point where he would accept it out of free will.   Great stuff.  Jack states that this is why he is here and what he is supposed to do.  Jacob asks Jack if that was a question.  And Jack responded firmly that it wasn't.   Jacob was happy with the response and then knew it was time to pass the torch to the new protector.

The anointing of Jack Shephard - Island Protector

  • Jacob takes Jack to a stream to begin the initiation process.
  • Gotta love Sawyer's one liner about thinking Jack had a God Complex before.  Kate insisted he calm down.  Sawyer knows that Jack is letting them all of of the hook and just had to get his one liner in.   Hurley acknowledges that he's glad it is not him.
  • Jacob tells Jack how to get to the Heart of the Island.  He said it's near the bamboo field that Jack woke up in when he first crashed on the Island.  Jack does not recall ANYTHING being there.  Just as we learned last week, it is a tough thing to find if you're not the Island protector.  Jack will NOW be able to find it.
  • Jacob confirms that this is where the Man in Black is going to try to get to and what Jack needs to protect.
  • Jacob asks Jack for a cup which he does have.  And then Jacob does the same incantation in Latin that his "mother" did prior to his initiation.  Of course, this time he is doing it to water and not wine.  Very symbolic of the whole Jesus turning Water into Wine.   Jacob fills the cup and asks Jack to drink.

  • Jack asks how long he will have to do the job.  Jacob says "As long as you can."  Jack fully accepts the responsibility and drinks from the cup.  Jacob responds just like his predecessor did with telling Jack now he is like him.  Did it seem like Jack experienced an enlightenment to everything after he finished his drink?  We'll find out soon!

Hard to imagine the end of LOST will be a scenario where we can expect Jack to be protecting the Island for 2000+ years doesn't it?  Maybe that isn't how it's all supposed to end.  We still have to find out what this Sideways world is all about.  But for this end-game, their mission is to STOP and KILL the Man in Black AKA Smokey AKA Flocke.   And folks, pitting Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Hurley, Miles and Desmond against Flocke and Ben is a beautiful scenario!   Can't wait to see how it all ends up!

The Well

We next rejoin Flocke and Ben on their way to the well where Desmond was "supposed to be killed" by Sayid.

  • Ben asks the Man in Black why he doesn't always remain as a Smoke Monster instead of bothering on walking around as a man.  MIB responds saying that he likes to remember that he was once a man.
  • When they arrive to the well, it is empty!  Hmmm, didn't Sayid tell Jack to go there to get Desmond out of it?  Maybe Sayid helped him out of it anyway?  Maybe someone else? (Jacob perhaps?)   There is a rope hanging down into the well.   Interesting.  In any case, Flocke knows that Desmond is not dead as he had requested.

  • Of course, this seems to have turned out to be in Flocke's favor.  Ben wants to know what Widmore said to him about Desmond.  Flocke tells Ben that Desmond apparently is a FAIL-SAFE (yes, we all remember the imagery of Desmond turning that Fail-Safe key when he blew the hatch).   This was Jacob's last resort in case MIB managed to kill all of Jacob's candidates.  One final way to make sure that he never leaves the Island.
  • Ben wonders why he is happy that Desmond is still alive.  Flocke says when he finds Desmond, he is going to help him do the one thing that he could never do himself.   There is only one fitting way to bring finality to LOST right?
  • Flocke raises the stakes of his plan:  "I'm going to destroy the Island!"

BOOM LOST!!!!

Well, yes, that would seem like a great way to end the show!  No more Island, no more show!  Of course, it brings the idea of the underwater Island in sideways land.  But I retorted this with the question of how Ben and Roger Linus would have memories of the Island?   Perhaps Roger in his old age, was remembering another life, and Ben was just going with it?   Eh anything is game for the final 2.5 hours!  But, I'm sure Jack and crew will do anything they can to stop Flocke.  And surely, there has to be some heroism to end the show.  Flocke can't certainly win in the end can he?  I guess he could.  But here's something to chew on.  What would be Ben's motivation to continue to help Smokey now?  He was promised THE ISLAND, and now Flocke is going to destroy it?   I can't find a better motivation for Ben to switch sides at the opportune time than that.  We shall see though folks.  Only a few days away!

For now, I will bid my adieu and cry a few tears knowing that we only have one more opportunity to do one of these recaps!  But we'll save the final tears, thank you's and farewells for then.  Don't forget that the Series Finale is on SUNDAY May 23rd with 5.5 Hours of programming.  (2 hour pre-show, 2.5 hour episode and 1 hour Kimmel special at Midnight)    Hope you enjoyed my ramblings and I'll see you next week after THE END!   NAMASTE!

Computer virus striking as fans search for "Lost" spoilers

Computer virus striking as fans search for "Lost" spoilers
QUAD CITIES, Iowa/Ill. - Sunday night, ABC will air the series finale of Lost.

In anticipation of the last episode, many people are going online looking for something called spoilers, information on how the story ends.

The problem with that is there's a new computer virus surfacing in these online searches that's targeting impatient fans of the show.

It's found when someone searches "Lost spoilers" in a search engine. The fake sites will ask you to download an anti-virus program, that's really a virus.

To avoid getting infected, do not download anything. If a box pops up, you can right click the item on the taskbar (on a PC) and select "close", or click the red close button (on a Mac)

Hmmm... they had to actually define what a spoiler is? LOL

Perhaps there is a third alternative to ISLAND reality and Sideways reality?
I really hope there is as I am still not buying Sideways land even though things have gotten exciting and the pace is really heading towards something climactic!
I like the idea of Daniel Faraday and Penelope Widmore RATHER than Daniel Widmore and Penelope Milton! lol!

Oh yes and after you set the time and dates just hit the save button and it's all yours.
A good listen on the way to the interview. I will be unable to attend. (sold out and couldn't get tickets.) I will be excited to read about it here.

I'm not surprised about the spoiler virus. I'm surprised those evil hackers waited this long to start their havoc.
Darlton has got us pretty busy this week, no need or time for spoilers anyway. I mean c'mon it's just a few days away. What's the point in someone else telling their perception of the story when a Masterpiece will unfold right in front of us as told by the creative masters.

Still reading your entire post but I think Jacob the boy could grab the ashes because he is not a ghost. Instead he is Jacob when he was younger, but part of Jacob's power is to travel through time so he is always one step ahead.

@Mike V - Okay, I get it but yeah I was surprised to hear that. I knew is a cross over but just to be sure.

That poster is awesome. Thanks.

Okay, thank you for finding the humor and the explanation in my fantasy, which btw, I am not looking forward.

I have to agree with you in a Jacob spirit about Widmore as the show having us think he’s the one, but from the clues, I just can’t believe. I had this thought on the tip of my head but couldn’t spit it out my mouth until today.

The main reason I don’t believe in Widmore as a villain like that is because he know the rules. In the old Mafia there was a rule to never harm any family member even if it meant calling off the hit. The fear of retaliation has a lot to do with it more than humanitarian reasons.
So I assume that Widmore wouldn’t be so careless and unwise to do that not knowing that a retaliatory move will be set in motion. That’s my main argument.

@Bill - Me and crash went at this. The SW world as in this season is the world where Smokey’s promises have came true with that one phoney difference. They got all they wanted bu the main ingredient; Love. Penny is not with Des, Charlie is not with Claire and so on. That’s why the island is also destroyed as Smokey said he would do. This is the world where everybody made a pact with the devil and it’s a mobius style loop in time and space Smokey used as a loophole to get his wish.

We just got back from NYT live event with Team Darlton and a couple of surprise appearances. Will wait for Mike V.'s lead before spilling on what happened and what was revealed and not revealed!

Went to watch the Lost Live with Mike..interviews with Carlton and Damon (who really appeals to the nerd in all of us much better than Carlton "stuffed shirt im always right" Cuse) and it was honestly fascinating..it really gave me perspective on the difficulty in writing and producing such a massive show..it was a great time had by all..until the live audience could ask questions and I felt like the room was full of the comic store guy from the Simpsons..sometimes, there is such a thing as being too big of a nerd (and that is coming from me, someone who is a rabid TCG and MMO player lol)

good times!

Hey Guys! WOW what an event! I will try to talk about some details tomorrow about some of the Q&A that I can remember. But there was one thing you may start to hear. THEY SHOWED US A SCENE FROM THE FINALE!!!! And there is no way I'm spoiling it for you guys. yes, they said they used discretion with the scene they chose. But even in some of these comments there has been speculation to the particular scene shown. Therefore, I will not say a word! And I urge everyone else that saw it to do the same please. SPOILER FREE!!

I will say that if the one scene is any indication of the entire episode...it's gonna be one for the ages!

Interesting things they did...we saw 3 clips from the show over the years and they discussed them:

Jack/Locke from season 2 Man of Science Man of Faith "Why do you think it's so easy? It's never been easy!!!!"

The CONSTANT Dez and Penny phone call...yes i cried again.

Season 5 - Whatever Happened Happened (Miles and Hurley time travel discussion)

Really the whole thing was great...and there were even some q&A's on WALT, Widmore and tons of stuff. And they answered as honestly as possible.

But the craziest thing was how much they refused to answer in fear that it might spoil something in the finale....something as simple as "when Desmond said to Jack 'you have to lift her up, Jack'...was that significant?" I MEAN...woa that was season 2! And they said "you won't leave the finale disappointed" as an answer. That is kind of nuts. There were tons of weird questions like that....and the same kind of answer.... That does set expectations pretty high for the finale....

But the biggest question asked was "when are you going to come out of radio silence after the finale?" and while they didn't answer specifically....they asked one of the surprise guests, JORGE GARCIA!!! (michael emerson was the other one)......they asked him "when you read the script...we gave you every opportunity to ask your questions about the show" (they insisted that the cast all said "WHY START ANSWERING IT NOW???" lol) Anyway...they asked Jorge why didn't he ask questions......Jorge kind of thought about it for awhile...and then he just said. "I get it" NICE......

This all being said...I'd still keep expectations low....but I'm super psyched! LOL

That's all I have for now folks...i'll respond to comments later....but since I know stuff already...I have to be careful with what I say! (don't worry...I don't know much....cue Aaron Neville... (if you get that joke...then WOW I applaud you lol))

Goodnight folks..time to watch the dying show FlashForward!

Okay, since I got FlashForward done quickly I'm just going to do a few comment responses and then I'll try to remember some more of the TIMES TALK Q&A tomorrow!

@Weasel - The virus is hysterical. But totally agree, defining "SPOILER" was the best part! lol

@David - a 3rd option would be interesting! Or some fusing of the 2 worlds I guess?? But yes...Faraday and Widmore are definitely the names I want them to be! lol well maybe or Penelope HUME!

@Candidate - thanks for the link for the download! I did start listening at 11 last night, but I didn't listen too long, I'll try to download it and listen a bit more!

@Gary - I choose to decline to speculate on this anymore! (based on other posts I made, you might be able to figure out why lol)

@Patrick - Interesting on BOY Jacob traveling through time! Didn't think about that. Another thing we didn't talk about much...did Jacob only appear when the ashes were burning? We know he appeared to Hurley in the beginning of the season when his ashes were burning. But what about in the LIGHTHOUSE ep? Surely Ilana had taken them out of the fire by then, right? I'm not sure. Anyway...the whole concept of the PHOENIX that turns into ashes and then is reborn comes to mind again. I think people were speculating about this in the season premiere as well! Anyway, it's all interesting ideas!

@Florin - No problem on the poster and getting the humor! lol Damon and Carlton had some interesting things to say about Widmore tonight and just people talking on the show in general. What they said is that there are many characters out there that we just can never trust what they say. If we SEE something, then it's true....but if we hear somebody talk about something (i.e. Widmore says Jacob came to see him)...it's not necessarily true....and this sort of sets up the stakes in the FINALE. Do the LOSTIES believe what Widmore's purpose for returning is or not? They didn't say if he was trustworthy either way...but it was written intentionally for us to debate! Those tricky bastards! :-) lol

@David - Thanks for letting me break the ice on the TImes Talk Live! Would love to hear everyone's thoughts who went because I surely won't remember everything. I loved how Damon and Carlton both gave teasers for the finale...but the other one thought it was too spoilerish loll Ahhh good times.

@AuStarwars - Sorry for not giving you credit! But yes....he came with me and my wife to the show! And we laughed at all the crazy people in the LIVE audience asking questions. One dude wasted his question with "I don't want to 'mistake coincidence for fate' but Jack is #23, did you choose may 23rd as the finale because of it?" REALLY!?!?!?! That was the only concrete answer Darlton gave all night. "NO" LOL Ahhh at least they could turn a dumb question into something funny! And there was tons of funny stuff all night. But hey...dude...watch what you say about Carlton,....I think he's the perfect balance to Damon! But of course...Damon is the funnier one of the 2!

@David - Funny you mention the Pentecost Sunday thing right after I went on and on about that guy asking that question about the 23rd! LOL

So @CRASH - I agree on that one. TOO FAR!! lol :-)

In all seriousness..I'm sure that was one major coincidence on the Pentecost Sunday thing. And I'm sure Doc Jensen will beat us over the head with it in Monday's final recap!

And hey...Just so we're clear. I have nothing against Pianos. I'm quite the player, myself! (piano, not ladies' man) I would like to go up against Daniel Faraday and David Shephard in a DUELING PIANO (TRIO-LING?) competition one day! It would be quite show! lol

Good night folks, talk to you in the morning!

I would like to try and clear something up. Just because I find intersting things in this story that are simular to some of the classics doesnt mean that Im making Literal comparisons. I dont expect to see Desmond pull out a sword and star fighting Hector.
But I do see the underlying story of how pride can rob someone of the things they love most.

I found that ABC had a Lost Book Club on their main website at one time and it has closed do to lack of interest.
Maybe if I had found that out sooner I would have left all my comparisons and hopes for discussing them on the shelf.

I missed a bunch of stuff on the blog here today, I hate Thursdays, too much work - that won't change when Lost is done.

I would have loved to have had tickets to the show tonight, (if that was me you were refering to MJ and Mike) it wasn't.

Our little Theater started showing Lost on Tuesdays, but I never went because it would be too late on a school night to walk home with my boy, who stays up and watches with me in his jams.

I really have to give Lost credit that we are all still trying to figure it all out this close to the end. So many other shows and movies are so predictable, seems like it has all been done before, so many formulas that are used and reused. Lost is brand spankin new, no hand-me-downs, never been done before wildness, and it has been a great ride.

I don't know if I am going to get the rewatch in before Sunday, just not enough hours in the day. I need to manipulate time like on the island....hmmmmm

Read you all tomorrow.

I am just throwing this out there and I have not read all of the comments yet (some not all), but could it be possible that we may get this redeeming Ben after all?

I am theorizing that Charles is actually alive (bulletproof vest) and Ben is actually buying Charles a little time. It seems silly to me to bring Charles back just to have him killed just like that.

Ben and Charles hatched the plan to trick Flocke. Perhaps what Charles told him was not the REAL reason he brought Desmond to the island and he told Flocke that to throw him off.

I am probably way off and the next comment I read will have written the same thing...oh well, back to reading the rest of these 200+ comments!

Here is someone else's take on the TIMES TALK LIVE. They have split up stuff between Non-Spoilers and then a link to spoilers. This is a link to the Non-Spoilers...and I suggest you don't click on the other part! They probably would talk about the video clip from the finale. And it is best if watched!

Write-up of TIMES TALK LIVE

@Crash - Water under the bridge man. Like I said, I was just getting frustrated and spoke out of that frustration. It's really when the discussion turns into something where fans who don't embrace the "literature aspect" of LOST as much start to be considered "less intelligent". And maybe that wasn't the intent, but it IS the perception. So, once again, I apologize for my outburst. And that's the last time I'm doing it! lol This is supposed to be a FUN discussion forum for LOST. So let's keep it that way! If you want to discuss this any further, feel free to shoot me an email (you can click "email the author" at the bottom of the blog or contact via email in my blogger profile). As for the book club, I was going to point you towards that since I remember seeing it before, but I didn't know it was shut down. Sorry to hear that!

@Gnni - Sorry you missed so much yesterday! I hate EVERY DAY if that makes you feel better! lol The blogging breaks help me get through it a bit better! :-) Sorry to hear you weren't at the Times Talk. Hmmm now I wonder who it was that got that Mother's Day present! lol As for manipulating time...better start digging now...I'm sure there's a donkey wheel somewhere near you!

@Grimm - I disagree with parts of your theory. I think Widmore is dead but I think Ben still will be redeemed! lol I still feel like I wanted to see that scene between Ben and Widmore even if Ben was going to do the right thing in the end. We couldn't have an entire season 6 where Ben was feeling sorry for himself. We needed to get him in the middle of the conflict one more time!

I think however the show ends it has to be based on decisions that Jack, Sawyer, Kate, Hurley (and let's not forget Claire) have to make. But yes, Desmond and Ben need to play key roles too! (and maybe a little bit of Miles too)

I wonder how much we'll see of the OTHERS scattered all over the jungle? lol

On Ginni4 post May 19 and a few others. I think I'm going to take the cue to rewatch this episode. After reading some of the posts and Mike v's thoughts on the rules and gifts that still apply, I've realized that my perception is all wrong. Richard is probably still alive but seriously injured perhaps? Thanks for setting me on the proper course corrections

@ crash
Yeah thanks for the input on song suggesions.

Whew - that TalkLive was fun. Lots of laughs. My theater in Voorhees NJ had about 40 people would be my guess.

I DID watch that clip they showed. They said it was not spoilerish - but I felt it was.

And to those who went - hubby felt that Jorge's answer from the audience question about whether he will continue his podcast was a spoiler. I'm not so sure though. Hint - what he said about what he could maybe podcst about after the finale.

Agree Mike - the if the clip is any indication - it's gonna be a great show.

MJ said...

Gnni - sorry ! I thought it was you too.

Austarwars - I was shocked to notice the same thing about Jorge - the guy looked like an Amazon. LOL

David Salako said...

The clip the aired during he NYT Live event was a spoiler - at this point I no longer understand what Carlton or Damon consider to be spoilers anymore! It was hilarious watching them keeping each other in check over revealing too much!
I was a little excited by Emerson's comment on enjoyable working relationships with other actors on the show.
It is still my belief that the season 4 silent scene Ben and Hurley shared sitting on a log outside the Cabin and "breaking bread" over an Apollo candy bar is a sign of things to come.

David Salako said...

We DID cry again at the Desmond and Penny 'phonecall scene from "The Constant" in glorious HD clarity on the big screen in the movie theater. Michael Giacchino's swirling music sounds so cinematic and has never sounded better. We don't have HD at home but after watching those clips from previous seasons of "Lost" in HD, it was like they were brand new again! Have to start saving for one of those HD TVs!

Mike V. said...

@AUStarwars - Totally agree hurley looked HUGE! My wife made a comment that even Emerson looked big in comparsion to Darlton lol Hurley just looked like a GIANT. and Damon and Carlton looked like hobbits lol

@Candidate - That's funny that you think I know what I'm talking about with the rules/gifts! lol Not sure if I should be honored or scared that I hold that much weight :-) But yeah, I'd like to rewatch the past 2 eps before Sunday. It's gonna be a busy weekend though. Hopefully I can fit it in!

@MJ - I think we had roughly 40 people too. I tweeted right before the show and that sounded like the norm in the responses I got. I have a picture (that my wife took) of 4 guys dressed up in DHARMA gear lol I agree about the clip being spoilerish. Definitely. But maybe in comparison to the rest of the episode that is MINOR? That would be awesome!! I think all that Jorge meant by his podcast comment....there were things in the scripts and they recorded it after reading it...but some stuff didn't make the final cut of the show...so they had to take it out of the podcast. So after the show is over, they might podcast about some of the stuff that was taken out of the show. I don't really consider that a spoiler! lol Unless, I interpreted it incorrectly. I love the fact that Jorge always talked on the podcast about how he doesn't know if Darlton know about the podcast.....and then Darlton didn't even bat an eye when they heard about it at TIMES TALK lol So they must've known!

@David - I agree...loved watching them keeping things in check. I will say I'm excited about the first 7 minutes of the show and that 2nd to last image of LOST! lol Yeah...i was interested about his comments about working with certain people...since I don't recall him working with said person too much yet. But then he mentioned 2 other people that he can't talk about. That was interesting too!
I loved see LOST clips on the big screen too....it was so great. I would love to watch LOST in its entirety up on the big screen. I have a 57 Inch HD at home with surround sound...don't get me wrong...it's great....but in a theater with a bunch of LOST fans? Nothing really tops that!

Rene said...

Hey it was me that got the ticket form Mothers Day and I thoroughly enjoyed the show. The best thing I got out of it was that I think I am now cool with whatever the ending they have come up with. I am speculating from what they said, it will be a resolution for fans that have followed these characters for six years. I hope nobody thinks thats a spoiler. I think there was a lot of spoilerish hints in there, so I hesitate to say anymore. But just saying I am even more excited for my LOST Sunday, I have TIVO going on two TVS in case one malfunctions. I will be starting to watch around 8 so I can see it as commercial free as possible and I have arranged my schedule so I dont have to be into work until late! Ahhh cant wait!!!!!!

Mike V. said...

@Rene - Sorry that we confused you for GNNI! lol That's great that you got to go to the show! Yeah, just listening to these guys talk for 5/6 years about the show has made me content, but the thing last night really was even better than all of the podcasts and everything they had done before. There definitely were lots of spoilerish hints...and with it being the final episode...i agree...i hesitate to say anything that would ruin the experience. I probably already have said too much but I'm being pretty vague about it all! Oh yeah my TiVos will be working hard!

I'll probably watch the 7-9 piece on delay (so i'll start at 7:30)...but I want to watch the actual episode LIVE....commercials will be rough...but they could be of super bowl caliber and it's an EVENT worth watching LIVE. It'll be painful but I want to do it! lol

My use of the temr Literate describing the vast majority of the "American Veiwing audiance"
was misunderstood
Literate - 2 a : versed in literature or creative writing .

and if you want proof of the Literate decline of the American viewing audiance you only have to ask yourself one question.

Why did ABC cancel Flashfoward
and keep V?

So if anyone misunderstood what I said and took it personally
I apologise.

David Salako said...

Definitely watching it LIVE to!
We usually DVR it in order to skip the commercials but this is one event that we will watch as it unfolds.

Mike V. said...

@Crash - Gotcha, I'm not sure that was the exact argument, but I do understand what you're saying. And totally agree on them cancelling FF and keeping V. I thought FF had a lot more potential, but V was definitely less of a thinker show!

@David - Oh yeah...ever since I got a TiVo i have watched everything on delay to skip commercials. It was great time management to fit more shows in a night! (Hope advertisers aren't reading this lol but they already know this issue!) Of course, this season I wanted to make sure I was ALWAYS watching LOST by 9:15 so I'd finish by 10 and I could give my TWEET REVIEW immediately after (I'm sure you can guess the word "WOW" was used in every single one of them lol) ....but the finale?? Totally different experience. I want to watch it AS it is airing and experience the event as it should be!

Rene said...

@david and mike...hmm, i will compromise and pause briefly at each commercial break! But hey, I am on the West Coast, by the time I start watching you will be "enlightened"

Mike V. said...

@Rene - So true! I did hear that most of the simulcasts around the world will be with the West Coast feed though so at least you won't be alone in being a little behind! :-) If anything, I'd be jealous because you still have NEW LOST to watch! lol

This is a touching little entry by Jorge Garcia in Variety. Thought I'd share: Jorge Garcia interview with Variety!

Just remembered a really funny moment from TIMES TALK...Darlton were talking about when they had to call Dominic Monaghan to tell him they were killing him off the show. They joked saying that he should have known it was coming. "You know...Desmond told you 10 episodes ago! It shouldn't have been much of a surprise! You should have leased not bought!" LOL That damon is one funny guy. He should take his act on the road. lol But it's even funnier having the "STRAIGHT MAN" Carlton Cuse by his side. Like I said before...they balance each other out really well.

Cecilia Hahn said...

Excellent recap as always!!
I could start commenting the reviews since last one due to I started watching the show on January, and after all this marathon I could arrive for the big finale on time! (and with my brain collapsed hehe)
Well, I´m one a little bit disappointed about this, I liked it and if it wasn´t the penultimate I´d have loved it. And that´s because there´s still too much for only 2hs and a half. OK we won´t have all the asnwers but it´s like everything is happening so fast. Maybe I had a lot of expectations, but for example, if Richard died like this...even Lapidus (and I can say also Ilana, and Widmore, altought he deserved it, seemed a nonsense massacre)

For example, I already expected that Jacob will choose Jack, instead it was my least character, I understood he was the first candidate and I don´t think all the "jacob´s touches" will be gone with Jacob, as they weren´t gone when the substitute mother died. So for me, no big answers were responded here. Yes ,maybe the one about Desmond, but you don´t know if it´s not another lie of Flocke.

Somthing came to my mind, remember the episode when Daniel died. he told Jack that it was their present and when they meet he (Daniel) hadn´t any wound in his neck. But why Jack in the alternate reality has the marks of his operation and his neck wound?
Steve´s theory is ver interesting, as he says they are like in a "matrix"

And remember that the alternate reality is in 2004 (where there is no island) and our "actual" LOSTIES are in the island in 2007 (or not?)so I hope Desmond can wake up all (except the dead ones...)

I theorized so much that my brain hurts :-D

Can´t wait to see the BIG FINALE!!!

crashriprock said...

So sticking to canton.
Has anyone else noticed how strange it is that the two men who wanted to take Jacobs place on the Island the most are now teachers in the sideways world?

Mike V. said...

@allismagic - Thanks! Way to catch up on the show for the big finale!! I hear you on things moving too fast and not having all of the answers, but just based on everything that the people involved with the show are saying...it seems like the ending will be very satisfying. I'm excited to see it. I'll probably be gushing over it for a couple weeks after....but then reality will set in and maybe I'll start nitpicking things lol For now, I'm still holding out to see what they're going to show us in the end. I have to believe they have made these final 2.5 hours truly special.

I think the important thing to note with Jack is how far his character has come over the years. Even if it was an obvious choice, there is no point in the writers changing their vision just to TRICK US, you know? That being said, all may not be as it seems and this show may not end with Jack surviving for thousands of years! lol I think much can happen in these final 2.5 hours. But Jack will definitely be heroic as we (I) always wanted him to be! Yeah...the whole "Matrix" type theory is interesting and maybe that is what is going on....we used to say the same thing about the show itself (before sideways)...that maybe these people are all being experimented on simultaneously and are in one united dream state....I always rejected the theory because it was "TOO MUCH" like the Matrix. But maybe Sideways is something similar. I think the cut on the neck thing needs to be explained.

I can't wait for the finale either!

@Crash - Interesting comparison with Ben and Locke being teachers. I always thought Doc Arzt would be a great Island protector too! :-) (j/k lol)

MJ said...

Mike - didn't mean about Jorge discussing left out scenes. Ok - possible spoiler warning for those that did NOT see the simulcast - don't read below. Or if you did see it and don't want to know what my husband thinks he heard....don't read below.

My husband's infernence was when Jorge was asked about continuing his poscasts - he said no at first as there would be no more scripts. Then he said that maybe they could talk about things changed or left off the script once it was filmed - but THEN he said something to the affect of maybe we can do a couple talking about the sideways alternatives. The host then looked really surprised and looked off stage to someone with a big smirk. Like - aha - got one of them to say something.

Penultimate Poster Revisited (PPR)

Here’s some final theories courtesy of my sons, and flight attendants. (I have run out of theories ever since Frank got whacked)

Desmond and Smokey will take a walkabout through the cave of light. Once Desmond reacts with the light, Smokey will die and Locke will be resurrected. Locke will emerge from the cave (just like Jesus), but Jack will doubt him (just like Doubting Thomas).

The Elemental Jack will temporally sink the island to prevent Smokey from leaving.

Jack and Kate will remain on the Island – Kate is pregnant with Jack’s kid. Jacob was actually referring to Kate’s pregnancy, not her interactions with Aaron.

At the Museum Gala, Desmond will have a Powerpoint presentation regarding the history of the Island. When the lights go back on, half of the Losties will be flashed back on the Island.

Kate will deliver Aaron at the gala.

Personally, I can’t wait to see Kate in her party dress. After all, the highlight of Season Five was watching Kate run around the supermarket in that black dress – Yozzaa!!!!

Times Talk Live in Vt.
There was only 1 theater in the entire state showing this. No advance ticket sales etc. When I went to get tickets at about 5PM yesterday there was a line around the block. It reminded me of opening night for the first Star Trek the motion picture (Now I'm showing my age.) There was no promise of everybody getting in. I had no idea that many people would come out for an interview. My point is I was a little surprised to see in some regions a turn-out of 40 people. I gotta say I'm glad I didn't see that spoiler scene.

I wish someone asked why Francois Chang is never credited on the show for his portrayal of Pierre Chang. They made a big deal of how actors being credited on the show in the opening minutes ruins the surprise element so their advice is: don't read the names of the guest stars during the first 10 minutes of the finale! And yes, they did say 10 MINUTES - inference is a lot of surprise appearances! lol!

@Crash - I looked him up. Close enough to me I guess, but still about a 4 hour drive away! lol

@David - Yeah it is interesting why Chau is never in the credits. As for it being the first 10 minutes...I think we have to remember the first 7 minutes is usually the opening segment...and the credits start rolling after the first commercial break lol But 10 minutes of credits would be nuts! lol I'm guessing there will be a lot of guests too and I'm going to try my best not look at them!

@Crash - No need to apologize for finding similarities in LOST through out the classic literature of our time.

It was not that long ago where I was looking at an old classic where I believe Jacob and MIB were being portrayed by thing one and thing two. And I was able to draw a correlation between their crazy mother to the cat in the hat (even though she does not actually wear a hat). And let's not forget Keamy mention of green eggs and ham in SW land... I would not be surprised if this factors some how into the finale.

I hope this isn't too much of a spoiler ;-) I've should have put the warning up front. LOL

I'm a big fan of your blog and without your insights the show would be even more of an enigma! So I wanted to thank you for guiding me along the journey of Lost!

As a suggestion, when the show is over, I think it would be amazing to have an episode guide from the beginning of the show, but this time with you acting as the omniscient navigator. It would be so good to have an episode guide that informs the reader what is significant, but with the power of hindsight. So all (or at least some) of the mysteries of Lost could be revealed as and when they occur.

Regardless of whether you follow through on the idea (or maybe you were already planning on doing it anyway!)I thoroughly enjoyed you navigating me through each wonderful episode of Lost!

To me, the greatest accomplishment of Damon and Carlton and Lost is that as of today -- one day before the finale, I can still read up-to-the-moment commentaries & analysis from fundamentalist Christians who seem to be 100% convinced that Lost is a literal Christian allegory (i.e. MIB is the devil; Jacob is Christ, etc.) And simultaneously, I can read analysis by rational humanists who also are 100% convinced that Lost supports their viewpoint (i.e. it's a treatise on reason over faith, the enlightenment over the dark ages, etc.)

And I don't know, but I'm guessing that will still be the case after the show is completed.

And that is pretty incredible, to me!

We all are sooooo seeing it through our own filters. And somehow CarDamon have done it in a way that people with very different filters can equally enjoy the show and interpret in their own way.

Also, gnni4 --
I've thought the same thing multiple times this week -- that it's so striking how uncertain we still are about how the show will end!

Huge huge huge kudos to Sr. Lindelof and Cuse! And the rest of their team!

Glenn R. said...

My Thoughts on Pacing

So, finally, here is my chime-in about my issues with the last three episodes, prior to "What They Died For."

To me, The Last Recruit and The Candidate were both very much NOT the Lost I have come to know and love. And most of it had to do with pacing. I felt very frustrated at how quickly the storylines picked up speed. For me, Lost has -- on the whole -- given us a chance to take in and really be present with the character developments and unfoldings. But that quality was gone in those two episodes.

Think back on when Charlie died. We had the entire episode to really be present with Charlie. To feel his joys and pains. And that enlivened and made his death at the end very poignant. To me, Jin and Sun deserved the same! And Sayid deserved the same. I honestly felt very little when Sun and Jin died. The story was just happening too quickly EMOTIONALLY. I was right there intellectually. But my feelings had too much to process. I did not feel emotionally grounded in the show the way I normally do.

And that made me MAD at Darlton! I mean, after all, they've had three+ years to get this right, right? I was asking myself: Why spend so much time on the Temple stuff earlier, or adding in Zoe, and Dogen and Lennon. Each of them had much potential, (Dogen in particular) but ultimately they were dead-end characters -- because there wasn't enough time!

Why didn't they cut out the extraneous stuff and focus less on telling the most complex story possible, but instead on telling the best story possible?

Those were the questions I found myself asking.

And "Across the Sea" did NOTHING to assuage my feelings. It felt so EXTRANEOUS. Why not just include about 5 or 7 2-minute scenes spread out across the entire Season 6, and we could have gotten all we needed. Or so I felt.

Somewhere I read someone who likened it to watching Star Wars or the Empire Strikes Back and having a long 30-minute segment describing the midichlorians -- IMMEDIATELY PRIOR to the end of the movie! NOT! Waste of time and energy.

There was very very little that I got from Across the Sea which either I didn't already surmise, or else could have been given in smaller chunks, within the natural flow of the storyline.

I was very happy to feel redeemed by the most recent episode though! It did it's job and got me thoroughly pumped for the finale!

Ultimately, it wouldn't change my bigger-picture feelings about Lost. And I've stayed open to seeing these three episodes with new eyes, after the show was all over. But I was a wayward child for three eps! (nice to be back in Mike's fold! :-)

Okay kids, I'm back to respond to some comments. I realized I missed some comments earlier in the day! WHOOPS! I will correct this oversight!

From around NOON yesterday:

@PPR - They all sound like good theories! I even mentioned a few of them as potential possibilities myself! :-) lol The one with bringing Locke back in the light cave is very interesting. I'd say Dead is Dead would prevent this...but we saw what happened to Sayid!

@MJ - Hmmm...the Aaron/Psychic thing...I don't know if they mentioned that one and I certainly forgot to. I didn't actually read the spoiler one for some reason lol

Okay, now to after 4PM yesterday:

@Snafu - hysterical stuff with Dr. Seuss! @Crash - way to be a good sport about it!

@Glenn - No, Darlton didn't say anything about 2 characters...it was Michael Emerson who mentioned the thing about the 2 characters that he worked with in the finale that he can't mention. Jorge also mentioned on Fallon last night that he knows everything about the finale except one little piece and only the 2 characters in that scene know about it. interesting.... of course, I'm sure some people would speculate it's the new Jacob/MIB scene at the beach where one professes to kill the other. I refuse to believe that scene will be in the finale! LOL

Love the graphic tribute!

@Tyrone - Thank you so much for the props and the suggestions! What you're suggesting is a great idea but a WHOLE LOT OF WORK! lol I have pondered doing something like that, but I think I'd be handed divorce papers by my ever patient wife if I took that task on! lol So, we'll see if I can come up with some sort of compromise! :-)

@Gnni/Glenn - Pretty cool that you guys found out you live near each other!

@Glenn - Totally agree that LOST can be interpreted so many different ways which makes it very special. Of course, one could argue that it's a total cop out by the creators, writers, producers that they made the show so intentionally ambiguous so they don't have to answer any questions for real! LOL But, I like my LOST ambiguous!

Good points about pacing...I would argue that ever since season 4 they have really "picked up the pace" with the storytelling. Things just happened a lot quicker once they had that end-date in mind. So the scenes we recall that happened over time had something to do with the "MILKING" that they were doing in seasons 2 and 3. There was more time to let some of these ideas linger from episode to episode. It all has to do with moving all of these pieces to where they need to be over the # of episodes that they need to do it in. The ironic thing about season 6 though is that most people thought it moved too slow and then too fast at the end. I think it's because of their ambitious goals with the sideways land and what they needed to unveil in the island story that it was mapped out the way it was. PERFECT? No....but I still loved it! Only my opinion though. The true test will be when we rewatch the show and see if that TEMPLE stuff was necessary.

I'm not going to comment on Across the Sea thoughts...I already wrote a whole blog posting expressing my satisfaction with the episode! And why I found it essential.

And glad you're back in the fold until after the end!!

I also have a feeling that Ilana's story was supposed to be a bit more elaborate and then cut short due to the realities of the amount of time left to finish off the series. Her steadfast loyalty to Jacob along with Bram and company needed a little more exposition. They weren't ISLAND dwellers as of 2004 to whenever they are now on THE ISLAND.

Mike, I just finally got some time to check out your TV Guide link, and WOW! When the link first opened it was in close-up view and I was diggin it, then I clicked it and it went to the real deal -- Awesome mosaic!

I have not noticed colors in the show, I feel like I need to rewatch this stuff but don't have time to, so I'll have to leave that for after the fact if you end up being correct.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GlennR, funny, I do live on a rock in Puget Sound but am not black smoke or seeking replacements. I bet Candidate has played The Replacements on his show though, and I've listened to his show.
Smoke and Sparkly water sounds like something someone on my island has consumed, and it probably made them loopy.
When you write you sound like someone I know, and I was going to RAZZLEDAZZLE you! I was prepared to ask you questions such as:
Jameson or Bushmills
Bob Marley or Peter Tosho
Pine or Cedar
Knights or Bishop's
If you were the GlennR I know you would have thought I was psychic, and I would have had to say I know these things because I'm either Tulip or Daisey.
Guess there are more than one GlennR in King County, sorry!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am looking forward to Monday and Tuesday and the discussions that we are all going to have almost more than the finale on Sunday, is that weird?

Is anyone else feeling a bit anxious and nervous about this all, or am I just stranger than I care to admit?

David Salako said...

@Gnni4 - I don't think you are strange or maybe my wife and I are just strange to! I was just talking to my relatives in Europe and the finale is being broadcast there simultaneously with the delayed West Coast broadcast. 5 am in the morning over there an millions are staying up to watch it LIVE!
This is actually a first for a serialized US TV show.
Typically only stuff like the Academy Awards or Princess Diana's funeral get this type of live international broadcast coverage.

@Glenn R - It is not the very nature of human and consumer side of us to see things through our own filters just as they create those things as human and producers through their own filters?

As with the pace and the lack of Proper mapping sure a few things and characters fell by the side, but I have expected the show to pick up pace no matter what at what point or another. Metaphorically, it only ends once so is natural that the closer you are to the conclusion, the faster it will pass by.

@davidsalako - I thing only ‘Dallas’ had a such following and me and my folks in Europe were staying up late to see who shot JR.

@Mike V - A very nice touch was the simplistic all encompassing answer to a lot of questions by Ben realising he’s been fooled by Smokey all the time, see my prior posts. Another one was why Flocke like to walk so much instead of smoking and the producers saying that we shouldn’t believe everything Widmore is saying. It may not satisfy everyone but there are real answers. I will believe in mine anyway as in my own personal interpretation of the show. In that way I feel is my show as well.

I'm way behind on comments but am catching up all evening. (Tivo'ing the enhanced pilot to watch later or tommorow morning. the so this may have been brought up. Did anyone see the Kimmell show with Darlton and Massive Attack? It was a real hoot with Damon and Carlton tied up and gagged until they agreed to continue making Lost. Chiming in on V
I think a week or 2 ago I said V was o.k. but not worth recapping. The last couple of episodes (of V) have gotten seriously stupid. I can't even watch the show anymore. At first I was watching mostly to check out Liz Mitchell and a couple of other hotties but their make up people are the worst I've ever seen in the industry making their starring ladies break out with serious blemishes and kind of ugly on camera. AND the story has gotten REALLY LAME.
My point??? I guess maybe I'd like to suggest to Mike about recapping good movies until a thought provoking series "Presents Itself."
I'd really like to see a Mike V recap on Avatar.

Never noticed that the pilot was the same guy on Heroes. I've only seen a couple of 1/2 episodes of it. I gotta say I just don't want alot of TV. For the same reason you don't pay for cable, I feel there just isn't enough good programming for me to check out and so often when a good show DOES comes around I usually miss out when it happens and check out DVD's or Reruns. Recently I just started watching Deadwood for the first time from the beiginning and I love it. Heroes is on my list to check out this summer. Thanks for the reminder.

Anyone still think that it is a just a coincidence that the finale is airing on a Catholic Holy Day - Pentecost?
Maybe it is but I don't think so, lol!

I to noticed a lot of the Candidates wearing white in the early episodes. Man, I really used to like Kate's character and Shannon is still too "high maintenance"! Good Times!

lol Gnni4... glad to hear you are not black smoke. Or seeking replacements! I was worried there for a split-second -- I was having visions of MIB appearing in the Puget Sound during the finale! Would NOT have been a good ending for Darlton.

Hmm, smoke and sparkly water have been consumed on your island, have they? Could it be... Orcas Island! Or, one of many many other possibilities.

No apologies necessary! Sorry I'm not your Glenn R. But for me, it's just fun to imagine another washingtonian watching lost and reading PA-Mike's blog.

As for your questions, I'm a Libra, so the answer to all if them is a Resounding YES -- all of the above!

That's pretty amazing, in my view.

Whew...lots of comments last night! Well, mostly discussion but I'll get to what I can here. BTW...HAPPY LOST DAY ONE LAST TIME!!!! I will echo what Damon Lindelof said on Twitter last night. He said things are gonna leak, but we have gotten so far....he compared last night to CHRISTMAS EVE....just wait one more day and experience it ....don't spoil it for ourselves by seeking out info. Well...we have less than 12 hours to go now! WE can make it folks. Okay..to the responses:

@David on Ilana's story - You could be right with that. I think part of the problem was just the format of this season with the Sideways and Island stories...there wasn't much room for Flashbacks...so they gave us like a 2 minute flashback for Ilana. There possibly could be more on the DVD in that 20 minutes of extra story maybe???

@Gnni - glad you liked that TV guide link! I still didn't get the magazine. Hopefully I still can! :-(
Not weird at all that you're looking forward to the blog discussion more than the show!! lol I just hope you guys can wait a little longer than normal because obviously it's gonna take me some time to get that thing done tomorrow! And maybe a few tears here and there for it being my final LOST recap :-(

@Scabfarm - thanks for the link, I'll check it out a little later!

@florin - I agree that the show put some great one liners in there to help close some questions that were bugging us. Good stuff. And I TOO am satisfied.

@Crash - I wouldn't doubt that Ben shot JR! lol Yeah...I'm not looking at any of the other sites until after the finale. I may even stop looking here just in case someone doesn't randomly come on here and SPOIL IT! lol

@Candidate - I haven't even finished watching V yet...and not sure I have the motivation to do it. Have 2 episodes to go! lol As for Avatar..I did mention that I wrote something up on it. Good idea with Movie recaps. The only problem with that? I would have to do them from memory after only seeing it once! WIth LOST...I have the episode playing on my computer as I type! lol

@Anonymous 7:38 - I think Shannon might be a little too young to be Jack's ex-wife...especially with a 16 year old kid! She was supposed to be in her early 20's I believe. Anyway, I do think Shannon will be in the finale though...it will be interesting if that is what triggers things for Sayid.

@Crash - I've seen billy 10 times (4 were with Elton I think)...loved every one of them!

@Candidate/Crash - As for Seth Norris...yeah the pilot is Matt Parkman. He was a friend of J.J. Abrams and was in all of his shows at least for a brief stint. He was on Alias too. (Greg Grunberg is it? I think so)

@Snafu - Funny on that book club! BTW...I did see on Twitter that someone else actually WAS starting an actual LOST book club. If I can find the info, I'll send it to you guys....especially CRASH/Candidate lol

@David - I still have to watch the enhanced pilot but yeah...if you recall in Season 3 "I DO" the marshal makes a comment that he thought Kate wasn't going to call....and it was one of the holy days....feast of the assumption maybe?

LOVED Deadwood....haven't seen Justified but I heard it's decent. Totally agree with Heroes having a great first season (except the finale, when the downhill spiral began)

Mike V. said...

@Glenn - Since you asked so politely....I'll do you one better. I had only sent this link out to family and friends after my wedding because I assumed that is all that would want to see it. But I did happen to get up on stage and do an encore performance of "Piano Man" which I had performed at a dueling piano bar the night before after our rehearsal. It doesn't necessarily show my skills TOO much (since it's a fairly easy song) but you can at least get an idea! lol Quality is pretty low...but all of the intro and outro effects were done on my iMAC...love that thing! lol

Mike V. performing Piano Man Definitely was more comfortable on that stage than I was doing that interview on the news after the Season 5 finale! lol (also on youtube)

BTW, Glenn...if you want to hear an mp3 that I might have (I have me and a band doing "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant" (no vocals) from my college days. It's pretty good! Just shoot me an email ...I'll send it to you.

Totally agree that this feels like getting ready for a breakup...(preparing for this final episode!)

@Crash - I can't wait to watch the show over again when it's all done! Funny with watching it all together. I'll be tivoing...but you know I'll be too busy writing and commenting to even attempt to pull off a rewatch of the finale that quickly! Good idea though! lol

@Crash - Yeah...the torturing of Sayid was very much a "mirror" of season 1 this season.... And yeah..it is crazy how much was said in these earlier seasons that actually does tie into how it's closing up. They have done a fantastic job if you ask me. Will there be continuity issues? Of course, but nothing is perfect!

btw..i rewatched the FULL Adam and Eve scene from House of the Rising Sun (season 1). I know people had corrected me on here about the 50 year deterioration comment being about the clothes before.....but I wanted to say one thing even further. Jack actually says "it takes 40 or 50 years for clothing to deteriorate like that".....so...he never really said it WAS 40 or 50 years....he was saying it was AT LEAST 40/50 years....granted...after 2000 years, you think it would be a little different but whatever.

The bigger thing I noticed was that Adam and Eve's skeletons were not next to each other as I thought I remembered. One of them was further away. Granted, I'm sure they could have been moved over 2000 years....but it was interesting that it was different from how I remembered! I forget how we saw them in "The Lighthouse" episode this season.

Oh well...like i said...not a big deal, but it was interesting!

I think I"m all caught up!

Mike V. said...

@Crash - yeah how creepy is that DREAM now with Claire and Locke now that we know that Smokey takes over Locke's image? The black and white eyes and everything too....crazy!

As for Billy Joel...I was born in '78 but I'm sure that tour was AWESOME!!! The first tour I saw was the BRIDGE tour....I was like 8 years old or something...and I LOVED IT! Became an instant fan. Went to every tour afterwards...sometimes more than once!

Gnni - you are not the only one! I keep looking at the clock - waiting for 9pm! I just cannot wait to see the ep!

At the timetalk Live some guy asked why they always show the actors names which ruins the surprise - which we all know is a legal thing. But we were warned that if we wanted to be surprised NOT to look at the name of the actors in the beginnng for the finale !!! Just FYI.

LOVE Billy Joel in concert - have seen him several times - including with Elton John.

Whew ! Almost 8 hours to go.

Mike V. said...

All of this time, surrounded by Billy Joel fans! lol Who woulda thunk? :-)

Just finished watching the enhanced PILOT ep. They did a good job tying it all together with the current events.

One thing I was thinking about more....remember the MOBISODE with Christian and Vincent before Season 4 began? Christian tells Vincent to find Jack and then says "he has work to do." If this is considered canon, then it would be hard to believe that this rendition of Christian was SMOKEY. It seems like something that Jacob would have wanted to do. And considering it was so close to the HEART OF THE ISLAND...and Jacob knew where Jack was when he woke up....it makes that conversation a bit more interesting.

I'm still hoping for a Jack/Christian reconciliation scene tonight!! I am fully prepared to bawl my eyes out for 2.5 hours lol Maybe a few tears of laughter along the way as well. :-)

@MJ - Thanks for the reminder on the names at the beginning. I'm guessing we're gonna see a ###load of names and probably none of them would really surprise me...but I'd rather not know up front! lol

@Candidate - nice comparison to Last day of school/graduation...very similar feeling!

I've been wondering about that mobisode ever since we started to discuss Christian @ the donkey wheel as well. Don't know why I didn't bring it up but that mobisode has been on my mind too. I THINK those are considered canon but not sure. that would be good to know.

Mike V. said...

Update, only 9,000 hits needed for 300,000! Considering we've had 17,000 hits each for the past 2 weeks, I think we'll have this covered! lol

But, I'm still struggling on Twitter! I still need 49 more followers to get to 815! I'm thinking it ain't gonna happen. Well...it WILL happen, just not tonight lol

Mike V. said...

@Candidate - yeah they're pretty much canon, they're just not NECESSARY viewing. Of course, Darlton did refer to the ROOM 23 Mobisode when talking about Walt at TIMES TALK LIVE. So, I'm guessing they're considering them as answers whenever it works in their favor! lol

But for the Vincent/Christian thing, I would think that this might HELP lead us in the right direction with something that could potentially be revealed in the finale.

As for the Donkey Wheel scene...I'm convinced more than ever that THAT version of Christian was Smokey...especially when we learned that he helped build the Donkey Wheel contraption (and possibly completed it).

But since this is lost my instincts could be wrong and it may very well turn out to be

MAN-BEAR-PIG

@Glenn R - I hear you. We all use our own filters and some chooses to wear some extra ones. I guess that’s why is good to have freedom of expression. Something good will always come from it.

I do have a point in their favor. When the creators of the show calls MiB as Esau instead of let’s say; George in the call sheets and his nemesis is called Jacob, I can’t argue as why the respective peoples will run with the story.

@Mike V - Greg Grunberg is or was, I don’t know the whole history, a good friend of JJ and he was on Felicity, Alias, to mention two of them. After Alias and Lost cameo, he was in a NBC comedy pilot, the NBC didn’t picked up for their line up so he landed the role of the LA cop in Heroes.

Nice piano play there dude. Very good, Billy Joel would be jealous. As with the mobisode I said then that if it would have been included it would had been canon and Christian wold had been associated with Jacob, Maybe they didn’t felt comfortable with it. But is nice to see you do see now the things I saw.

Happy Watching tonight, to Everyone on this blog! I'll be thinking of you all in solidarity from Seattle.

I am psyched to have such a great space to come back to after it's all over to figure it all out!

Wow, my last-ever post prior to the End of Lost! Hard hard hard to comprehend. ONWARDS, to The End!

Well Done Mike.

I encourage everybody to visit the Gather page to show your appreciation.

Anyhow, I was reading Umberto Eco's, Focaults Pendulum. Start of Chap 20 I come accross this, "The Grail is often depicted as dazzling light, it’s a symbol representing power, a source of immense energy. It nourishes, heals wounds, blinds, strikes down…”

"

Now, we do know that the island has special properties and indeed it is a holy grail of sorts, but what if its more literally, the holy grail? Or Perhaps the Light is the holy grail - the mystical stone ( or perhaps cup). The reason why explorers were going there was to find the holy grail?

Can't wait for this week.

That sucked worst ending ever!

AWESOME ENDING!!! I have never cried so much for a TV show or movie

My dog could have written a better ending.

Mike V. said...

I loved it (big surprise). It helps that I was totally right about the final shot!! Lol

Anyway, recap won't be up until late tomorrow. If I find people want to discuss, I may need to post up a temporary posting or something while I write lol

Six years of investing our emotions in characters that just end up dead ?
What the f*** was the point?
When did Penny die?

Mike V. said...

They all died at different times. That was after they all had died. Think about all the ghosts we have seen in all 6 seasons. I had theorized on that too in earlier blogs. That it was sideways related. Maybe the recap and discussion tomorrow will clear things up.

Anonymous said...

What clearing up? They are all dead no one lived What the hell kind of a show takes all its heros and kills them all? Were the writers on strike? Did some one lose a bet?

Mike V. said...

they died EVENTUALLY! The episode was called "THE END" wasn't it?

Some of them still went on to live full lives. But when they died, they had their meeting place.

If you recall, there was a line in Across the Sea - "EVERYONE DIES"

Anyway, I don't want to discuss this episode any more in this posting...I'm going to post a new temporary discussion post.

So Jacob touched everyones lives just so they end up dead on an island? What is the moral to this story? Boycot ABC?

Fonzie's Waterskis said...

...funny how the writers kept hinting to books. Apparently we would have been better off reading those instead of investing 100+ hours in Lost.

FANTASTIQUE _ WOW.LOST

My eyes are watery from so many memories and happy reunions.
Kudos to Mike, Frank Lupidus is alive.
I was right in what was I assuming based on the clues about Locke from season 1-4.

I said 4 seasons ago to a neighbour, Hans that chances are they were all dead and it was their souls that lived that life. I abandoned that idea for awhile, but I was right. My inspiration for that ws the ‘Sixth Sense’ and the fact that nobody could have survived that fall off the skies.

Well, for me Lost will live forever, never thought to send a good-by and have answered all my questions. Especially Jimmy Kimmel ;-)

Florin, I posted a "Finale Discussion" post to keep "THE END" discussion out of this episode's recap. (don't want to spoil it for people who are reading these comments before watching THE END.

I'm starting the recap but it's definitely gonna take awhile!

Floreen said...

@Mike V - Oops, sorry, I did my best not to spoil it. Is past midnight here so I thought that is over even on the West Coast. I will read your recap tomorrow, but I am giddy about been among the first to post.

Mike V. said...

Florin, no you were fine. Lots of people above were commenting on it too.

I am thinking about future readers of the blog. Some people are watching the show from the beginning now and they are reading the comments along the way (I know, crazy right??) They still find the posts relevant. So I want to keep these comments pertaining to the episode as much as possible!
